A Heritage Volunteering Opportunity

For past generations, regular church-going was part of our local and national identity. As numbers attending have declined, church buildings have closed and congregations amalgamated. While the buildings may survive, the artefacts and hence much of the community identity and heritage is lost to future generations.

Recently, one of our members shared information about volunteering to record these items as part of the Scottish Churches Trust Recording Project.

What is involved

I signed up as a volunteer, and with two others have just carried our our first local recording project. It is essential that we record the life of churches that are under threat of closure but in reality we need to have a record of the life in all churches. There is a sense of urgency to get this done so with a camera, iPad or phone a church can be recorded in a few hours using online forms and by uploading photos. You will really enjoy doing this!

Please help to preserve our history for future generations. If you have some spare time please watch this webinar for further information.

To volunteer

Together with Historic Environment Scotland, the project aims to enlist and empower local volunteers to record its area’s unique, multi-generational, cultural heritage before it is lost forever.  Project director, DJ Johnston-Smith’s full appeal for volunteers can be read on the AHSS website.
